SAFETY
A well constructed and
carefully operated Steam Launch is inherently safe ..However there are some
points to consider.
OPERATION:
- The same commonsense
rules apply to operating steam launches as other small craft. Local
conditions, wind, currents and tides must be taken into account, as well as
the proximity of other water users.
- Care should be taken to
ensure that the water level in the steam boiler is maintained.
- Problems with the steam
installation should be referred to an expert without delay.
- Fuel is inherently safe
in the form of coal or paraffin, but care must be taken in storage, and
spillage dealt with immediately to avoid the risk of fire.
CONSTRUCTION:
- The design of the Hull
should allow for the weight of the steam plant, while providing
stability and sufficient freeboard.
- The Boiler must be of
steel construction - copper is sometimes substituted in some cheaper boilers
on the basis of better thermal efficiency, and ease of construction -
however copper is less tolerant of accidental lowering of the
boiler water level.
- The Traditional Boat Shop
and Glyn Lancaster Jones will provide a well-engineered product built to
tried and tested designs - however the safe operation of all our products
rests entirely in the hands of our customers - so treat steam with care and
respect and it will be your friend.
